Local Children’s Book Author Prepares for Summer with Stories of Outdoor Fun

Though it may not feel like it now, summer is right around the corner. Before you know it, temperatures will be climbing, pools will be opening, and schools will be closed.

Silver Spring resident and children’s book author Dianne Branch is ready to help kids welcome the lazy days of summer with her Sydney and Logan series. The series features books and iPhone apps addressing topics such as “Summer Fun” and “Logan’s Caterpillar.”

“Summer is so special to me and my kids because we get to spend more quality time together. The days are longer and the weather is nice so we can do a lot of fun outdoor activities. The experiences my family has especially during the summer months are priceless and I want to capture them in my books.”

Dianne’s journey as an author began in 2008, when she was expecting her son, Logan. She wanted to find a children’s book to help guide her daughter, Sydney, through the process of becoming a big sister. Dianne wanted a book that Sydney could relate to and see herself in, but had trouble finding stories with characters that accurately reflected her child.

So Dianne took matters into her own hands. She established DB Children Books, and in August 2011, brought Sydney and Logan’s story to the world with her first self-published story, “Sydney Becomes a Big Sister.” She followed “Sydney Becomes a Big Sister” with “Logan’s Caterpillar”, “Sharing, Getting Along, and Taking Turns” and “Summer Fun.”

Once the book series had launched, Dianne expanded the brand by converting several of the titles into iPhone/iPad apps.

“I decided to launch my books as apps because we currently live in such a techie world with lots of electronic gadgets,” explains Dianne. “My son and daughter are always using my iPad. My future  goal is to have all of my books as apps.”

Guided almost entirely by her children’s real voices and experiences, Branch’s books provide an enjoyable authenticity that young readers can easily relate to and understand.

“Sydney told me what to write,” explains Dianne. “She told me the story, she told me to talk about how small Logan was right after he was born and how excited she was when I brought him home.”

As her children grow and develop, Dianne hopes to expand the Sydney and Logan series to include additional topics.

“As a parent, many issues pop up every day and I keep a journal of these issues. I wrote my very first book based on our family’s personal experience with a new sibling. The second book was based on Logan’s experience with his first pet butterfly. I have plenty more issues to write so stay tuned for new titles. “
