5 Things You Need to Know Today: August 18, 2011

Happy Thursday, Silver Spring! Here are five things you need to know as your week winds down.

Good Morning! Here are five things you need to know to stay up-to-date about what’s going on in the community:

1. Today will be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms and a high of 87 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Keep an umbrella close throughout the evening as showers are still possible.

2. Is your child secure? The Montgomery County Police, Fire and Rescue personnel and trained Fitzgerald’s Auto Mall staff will be on hand to inspect your child safety seats for proper installation. will be held Aug. 18 at the Fitzgerald’s Auto Mall, located at 5501 Nicholson Lane in Kensington, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

3. Dine out at El Nopalito Grill and at Loiderman Middle School. Choristers are very likely to break out into song when the karaoke machine comes out during the fundraiser from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.  

4. The Montgomery County Public Schools supply drive is still going on so don’t forget to donate. MCPS is partnering with local businesses to . Drop off items at the  in downtown Silver Spring from Aug. 10 to Aug. 17. After Aug. 17, items can be dropped off at the MCPS Department of Family and Community Partnerships through Aug 25. The donations will be given to students at the Back-to-School Fair. For more information, call 301-279-3100.

5. The Silver Spring Town Center is hosting tonight from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m in Silver Spring Veterans Plaza. This free arts and entertainment program for the greater Montgomery County community features bands performing music ranging from jazz to the blues.
