5 Things You Need to Know Today: Sept. 1, 2011

Happy Thursday, Silver Spring! Here are five things you need to know as you wind down from your week.

Good Morning! What five things do you need to know to stay up-to-date about what’s going on in the community? Patch has you covered this Thursday:

  1. Today will be partly cloudy, with a low around 84 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Into the evening, there is a slight chance of showers with a low around 64 degrees.
  2. Enjoy a night of music on Veterans Plaza! Sit back and relax to the smooth sounds of local musicians such as Warner Williams & Joyce Ettingoff, the Greater U Street Jazz Collective including Luisa & her Imaginary Orchestra. The performance starts at 7 p.m.
  3. Thursday marks the one-year anniversary of the Discovery hostage crisis. Silver Spring Patch will have a series of stories that delve into some of the changes in the community and one-on-one interviews with those affected since Sept. 1, 2010.
  4. Take the night off and be creative with the kids. Friends and family night at Color Me Mine is a great way to do it. The $15 table fee is from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  5. Has your family gone to  yet? The Maryland State Fair is going on until Sept. 5 so take advantage of the rides, animals and hours of other entertainment. Prices are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors (62 and over), children ages 6 to 11 are $3, and children 5 and under are free.
