Mandatory Water Restrictions May Lift This Weekend

WSSC hopes to have the repaired line back in service by the end of the weekend.

Mandatory water restrictions for Montgomery and Prince George's County residents may lift as early as this weekend, Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission said in a statement Friday.

The restrictions came after about 60 million gallons of water were lost after a water main burst Monday night in Chevy Chase.

WSSC crews are nearly finished repairing the piping, the utility said.

"If everything goes well, we hope to have the pipe back in service sometime this weekend, which would then allow us to lift mandatory water restrictions," the WSSC statement said.

WSSC offered the following suggestions to cut down on water usage:

  • Use water only as necessary (i.e., take shorter showers and turn off faucets after washing hands and while brushing teeth).
  • Limit flushing toilets (do not flush after every use).
  • Limit using washing machines and dishwashers (wash full loads only).
  • Stop all outside water use (i.e., do not water lawns, shrubs or flowers, and do not wash cars).
