Back in the fall of 2002, John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo were regulars at the YMCA of Silver Spring.
The duo would later make national headlines as the killers behind the sniper shootings that began in October of that year. Ten people were shot to death and three were wounded.
Jim Ross, a public health researcher in Silver Spring, recounts his interactions with the men at the community center for The Atlantic magazine.
Muhammad was executed by lethal injection in November 2009. Malvo was convicted of six murders in Montgomery County and is serving a life sentence without parole.
