Safe Silver Spring Chair to Speak at Anti-Gun Violence Rally

Along with Councilmember Marc Elrich, the chair of a Silver Spring safety group will speak out in support of stricter gun laws.

The leader of a public safety group Safe Silver Spring is scheduled to join Montgomery County Councilmember Marc Elrich at a rally in support of Gov. Martin O'Malley's gun package this Friday.

Tony Hausner, chair of Safe Silver Spring, is pushing for passage of three bills that will, together, require fingerprint background checks and safety training for gun purchasers; allow for more regulation of "gun dealers who flagrantly violate the law and are a source for illegal guns," and would require lost or stolen guns to be reported.

The State Senate approved the gun bills Thursday and they move to the House of Delegates.

"Across the United States, the more guns, the greater the number of gun deaths," Hausner said. "It is a clear correlation and one we can no longer ignore.”

The rally is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 1 at Lawyer's Mall in Annapolis. A joint hearing of the House of Delegates' Judiciary and Government Operations committees will take up the gun package at 1 p.m. the same day.
