Update, 4:15 p.m.: Piney Branch Road between Dale Drive and Sligo Creek Parkway has reopened, according to Lyn Riggins, WSSC spokesperson. The right-turn lane from southbound Piney Branch Road on to Dale Drive-Park Crest Drive is closed, she added.

Riggins said that the crew is still getting the hole pumped out. "Once all the water is out of the hole, we can see what we're dealing with. We know we need to replace one section of pipe."

Thus far, WSSC has determined that there is an 8-foot hole in a section of pipe that's 16 inches in diameter. The pipe dates back to 1950, Riggins said.

A typical break takes about four to six hours to repair, Riggins said, adding that if more than one section of pipe is affected, then the repair could be a little bit longer.

Update, 2:38 p.m.: Patch has confirmed that WSSC is now on the scene of a water main break on Piney Branch Road.

A worker for WSSC estimates that the repair will take approximately two hours.

Police remain on the scene. Piney Branch Road between Dale Drive and Sligo Creek Parkway remains closed.

Original post, 2:15 p.m.: A water main break on Piney Branch Road has forced the closure of this main artery between Sligo Creek Parkway and Dale Drive, according to a spokesman for Montgomery County Police.
