The Art of the Roman Empire

This lecture explores the Romans’ debt to Greek art and their innovations in sculpture, painting, and public architecture.  How did Roman artists adapt and transform Greek traditions?  How did innovative uses of arches, vaults, and domes produce new kinds of engineering marvels such as aqueducts, public baths, the Pantheon?  What role did art play in Roman religious, political, and cultural life?  What do Roman portraits tell us about Roman views of life and death, family, social status?
