Brewery Controversy, Whole Hog Dining, Noodles and Tablecloths: Foodie News

Get caught up with the food scene in Montgomery County and adjacent Washington, DC, neighborhoods with Patch’s foodie news column, 1 Meat, 3 Sides. This week, a new Silver Spring brewery—and some controversy surrounding its name—take center plate.

One meat:

Plans are a-brewing for an early summer opening of Citizens Brewing Company, at 1115 East-West Highway, Silver Spring, DC Beer reported. The business will brew a variety of beers on-site and will have a beer garden, a bar and American tapas-style dining. Read more about the brewery on DC Beer.

The new brewery's name is causing concern for the owners of local craft brewery DC Brau, which sent Citizens Brewing Company's owners a cease-and-desist order. DC Brau makes a beer called "The Citizen," and DC Brau's owners worry that the name of the Silver Spring brewery will confuse people, DC Beer and dcist reported.

Three sides:

Urban Butcher—Silver Spring's new "nose-to-tail" restaurant—opened on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 8226 Georgia Ave. The restaurant offers an eclectic menu of local meats and a wide selection of wine, as well as a butcher shop. See photos of the food on Silver Spring Patch. And, read about the philosophy behind the food.

New pizza restaurant PizzaPass—which will offer a hybrid New York-Chicago-style pizza and constant table-side service—opens Saturday, Dec. 14, at 4924 St. Elmo Ave., Bethesda Now reported.

Upscale Bethesda restaurant Newton's Table (4917 Elm St.) has been offering the Newton's Noodles menu during lunch for the past couple of months, Bethesda Magazine reported. Newton's Noodles is actually a separate eatery (at 1129 20th St. NW, Washington, DC) offering fuzu—a quick, choose-your-own-ingredients stir-fried dish—but the two eateries are owned by the same person, Dennis Friedman. Read more on Bethesda Magazine's website.

Dessert:

By Christmas, frozen yogurt shop sweetFrog will open at 100 Lexington Dr., near Montgomery Blair High School. The shop will offer more than 20 flavors of fro yo, including apple pie, Dutch chocolate, egg nog, dulce de leche, French toast, Greek honey and carrot cake. Read more on Silver Spring Patch.
