Publicity Sparks Tons of Donations for Silver Spring's Wheelchair Society

The Silver Spring-based nonprofit was in danger of closing in August, the Washington Post originally reported.

Whoever said "no news is good news" wasn't talking about the Washington Area Wheelchair Society, a Silver Spring nonprofit that said local coverage about its financial woes has skyrocketed donations of money and supplies, the Gazette reports.

The organization, which provides mobility supplies like wheelchairs and scooters to people with disabilities, said it's received nearly $7,000 in donations and lots of used medical supplies following an August story in the Washington Post, the Gazette, Patch and other media outlets, that detailed its struggle to pay rent and utilities. They are now two months ahead with the bills, according to the Gazette.

“Everybody is just grinning like crazy,” Executive Director Paul Holland said of the nonprofit’s community. “You have not seen so many happy faces in a long time.”
