Tax Credits Available for Historic Home Preservation

The application deadline is April 15.

 

With more than 3,000 historically designated structures in Montgomery County, home/property owners can receive significant tax credits for recent construction projects.

The county's Historic Preservation Commission is currently accepting applications for a county tax credit on work completed in 2011.

If you received a historic area work permit for a rehabilitation project that exceeded $1,000, the work may qualify for a tax credit. Tax credits, which total 10 percent of renovation costs, are applied toward property tax bills.

Eligible work includes:

  • Painting
  • Uncovering and repairing original siding.
  • Repaired architectural trim or ornament.
  • Repaired roofs or windows or replacing them in-kind.
  • Repointed brick, stone foundations or chimneys.
  • Restoration of a documented feature including a porch that was previously altered/removed.
  • Repaired and maintained outbuildings such as barns and garages.

Not all exterior projects are considered eligible.

Once applications are submitted by April 15, 2012 Historic Preservation Commission officials will review applications.
