Pancakes Bring People Together

I love pancakes! They were as much a part of my Saturday mornings growing up as the Tom & Jerry cartoons. I never attended pancake breakfasts as a kid. Our pancake breakfasts were private affairs. They were dependent on my stepfather waking up in a good mood on a Saturday morning which he usually did because he did not have to work Saturdays.  He would heat up the griddle and work his culinary magic.

My first public pancake breakfast experience was two years ago at the Inter Faith Families Project. It was an Easter Sunday Pancake Breakfast.The pancakes were good, there was even matzah brei because it was Passover, but there was something even better than the pancakes and I love pancakes. It was the community. 

That pancake breakfasts took pancakes to a whole other level for me because "community" is the whisk that make the pancakes lighter & fluffier. Community makes the experience richer than the richest maple syrup you'll find on any shelf. I wasn't even in my pajamas and there in sight of either a Tom or a Jerry, but I felt more at home than I ever did.

This Saturday, June 11 from 8 am to 12 noon, Chef Daniel Beavin and I will host a pancake breakfast at Pyramid Atlantic. For just $5 come and enjoy a plethora of pancakes, fruit, juice, coffee, vegetable and fruit printmaking activities and community. Proceeds from our pancake breakfast will benefit Pyramid Atlantic’s arts & education programs.  RSVP (so I know how much syrup to buy!) to: Jose

I can't promise that the pancakes will be as good as my stepdad's (or yours) but I can promise that the community will be out of this world and make you a believer in the "power of flour" to bring us all a little closer and make us feel, if just for one morning, all part one community.
