United Way Continues Good Work for Hurricane Sandy Relief

United Way of the National Capital Area staff help with the "muck out" of homes and buildings in the Rockaways.

On Tuesday, Dec. 18, 23 United Way of the National Capital Area staff members boarded an early morning train out of Union Station in Washington, DC and headed to New York City to assist with Hurricane Sandy disaster recovery and relief efforts.

The coordination of this volunteer effort  was through NYCares, a volunteer organization based out of New  York. During their day-long visit, staff participated in the "muck out" of homes  and buildings in the Rockaways, a heavily hit area within the New York City borough of Queens.

United Way of the National Capital Area serves Montgomery County and Prince George's County, as well as DC and Northern Virginia.

The following in-kind donations helped make the trip possible:

  • NYCares provided the volunteer opportunity and provided free transportation to the volunteer sites.
  • The New York Sports Club allowed United Way NCA staff to utilize their locker rooms to change, shower and get cleaned up after the muck out.
  • Potbelly’s (718 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20005) donated 24 boxed lunches for the volunteers.
  • Kaiser Permanente shipped masks and gloves for the volunteers to use during their volunteer efforts.
  • Let It Fly Energy provided electrolyte drinks to the various volunteer sites.
