Monday marked the start of National Dog Week! Show your pup some extra love with our fun ideas!

Monday marked the start of National Dog Week! It is a perfect opportunity to give thanks for all the happiness and joy that dogs bring to our lives. According to a recent study by George Washington University, improved health is even a benefit of being a pet owner!

Here are few ideas to show your pup some extra love this week:

• Make it a social event. Find a dog-friendly happy hour (also known as a "yappy hour") and invite some friends. Check out these local recommendations.

• Pick up a new toy or treat for your pup on your way home from work. How about a doglicious baked good? Check out the Barkley Square Bakery in Alexandria or Dogma Bakery in Arlington. Of course, don't forget about Living Ruff in downtown Silver Spring.

• Enjoy the crisp fall weather. Treat your furry friend to an extended walk or a trip to the local dog park. Test out the Washington Post interactive dog park map.

• Keep their health in mind too. Schedule an appointment with your vet if your little guy or gal has yet to go in for their annual exam. According to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), "regular wellness exams allow your veterinarian to evaluate your pet’s general health and become aware of any health problems before they become serious illnesses." • Celebrate in style! With the chilly weather now upon us, consider purchasing a new doggie sweater to keep them warm. Check out Dog Milk for some hip houndwear.

Tell us how you plan on pampering your pooch during National Dog Week.

Some National Dog Week History - Surprisingly, this is the 83rd National Dog Week. The celebration was founded in 1928 by Captain Will Judy to honor military dogs as well as our beloved family pets.
