No Cost Cutting for Canine Owners

According to a recent survey, nearly seven-in-ten dog owners report that harsh economic times haven't affected their dog care spending.

According to a recent survey by CouponCabin.com, nearly seven-in-ten dog owners report that harsh economic times haven’t affected their dog care spending. The survey, which was conducted in honor of National Dog Week, polled more than 2,000 U.S. adults. When asked to name the priciest aspect of having a dog, survey participants said:

Veterinary appointments – 57 percent
Food and treats – 16 percent
Prescriptions and medications – 15 percent
Boarding – 6 percent

I was shocked not to see grooming on top of this list in a world where my dog’s haircuts cost more than mine. Ever wonder why that is? Read the top 10 reasons your dog’s cut cost more than yours. One reason being that you don’t try to bite or scratch your hairdresser (hopefully). For the DC folks, I take my dog to Cleverdog in Silver Spring, Md. to keep him looking sharp.

Trying to Save a Few Bones?
CouponCabin offered up some money-saving tips such as purchasing generic brands when possible and asking friends and family members to help out instead of using fancy dog sitting and walking services. I would also recommend keeping an eye out on deal-of-the-day websites like Groupon and Living Social which frequently offer dog-related discounts. Be sure to check out My Pet Savings for freebies, coupons and other great deals on items like food, flea and tick prevention and puppy training pads.
