Get Out: Weekend Activities Downtown and Nearby

No idea what you'll do this weekend? Patch is coming to the rescue.

Start your weekend off with a list of events to enjoy yourself in Silver Spring and around the county. Check out our picks for activities and events to enjoy and new bars, restaurants and shops to explore!

1. FORTH ANNUAL SILVER SPRING ZOMBIE WALK

Where/When: Begins intersection of Georgia and Sligo avenues, (but arrive early to celebrate with fellow zombies!). Start time is 8:45 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 22. Walk ends at AFI Theatre at 9:45 p.m.

Why go: Zombies take over Silver Spring! This is the once-a-year chance to watch an expected 2,000 ghoulish participants as they amble through downtown — or be one of them! The walk ends at AFI Theatre, in time for a showing of the movie Dead Snow.

Pricing: Free; movie tickets extra (purchase from AFI Theatre).

Where/When: Downtown Silver Spring, Saturday, Oct. 22, noon to 6 p.m.

Why go: This inaugural fest celebrates the “go local” movement in Maryland and will bring together farmers, chefs and wine, focusing on local products from various Maryland regions. Events include live chef demos, "foodie finds," wine tastings and pairings and live local music.

Pricing: Admission free; tasting pass $15, or $25 for a food & wine pairing pass.

 

3. ICC 10-MILE FAMILY BIKE RIDE & 5K WALK/RUN

Where/When: 14200 New Hampshire Ave., 8 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 23 (bikers should be off the course by 9 a.m. to clear the way for walkers/runners).

Why Go: Take advantage of a rare opportunity to get an up-close look at the  second segment of the new Intercounty Connector (ICC), by walking, running or biking it. The event will benefit Special Olympics Maryland and is hosted by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) and Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA).

Pricing: $25 for adults; $12-25 for children.

 

4. MORMON TEMPLE HISPANIC HERITAGE CELEBRATION

Where/When: Washington, D.C. Temple Vistors' Center, 9900 Stoneybrook Dr.
Kensington, Saturday, Oct. 22, 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Why go: The spectacular cultural celebration, now a Visitors’ Center tradition, features a video as well as professional entertainers, musicians and dance troops representing cultures of Latin American countries. The colorful costumes and festive atmosphere can be enjoyed by all ages. here will be a performance at 5 p.m.* and one at 7 pm*.

Pricing: Free; tickets (free) required for admission. The free tickets will be distributed at the Vistors' Center 90 minutes before each performance.

 

5. CABIN JOHN "EYE SPY" HALLOWEEN TRAIN

Where/When: The Cabin John mini-train at Cabin John Regional Park, 7400 Tuckerman Lane in Bethesda. Jump on the train Saturday, Oct. 8, and Sunday, Oct. 9, from 3-8 p.m.

Why go: Grab the kids for this not-so-haunted train ride through Cabin John Park. Perfect for the little ones.

Pricing: $6; $5 with canned food donation.
