Do You Need a Professional Organizer?

How to decide if hiring a professional organizer is right for you.

Has this happened to you? You are running late and you can't find the last thing you need before walking out the door because there's so much clutter everywhere. Or you're expecting guests and you don't know what to do with all the stuff lying around, so you throw things in a closet or other out-of-sght place, but then never retrieve it all. Or maybe your kids' mess is driving you crazy.  Perhaps you've been late paying a bill because it got lost in all the piles of paper. There could be any number of scenarios that lead you to believe that you've just GOT to get organized!

At this point you may wonder if you should call a professional organizer. The questions you're likely to ask yourself include:

    1. How much does it cost and can I afford it?

    2. Couldn't I really just do it myself?

    3. How long would it take to get my house in order?

    4. Am I too embarrassed to let anyone see this mess?

Possible answers include:

     1. Professional organizers charge a wide range of fees, some by the hour and some by the job. Some have package deals. You can find an organizer in your area by going to NAPO.com (National Association of Professional Organizers.)  Some offer free consultations and you can interview several over the phone or arrange to meet in person. Then you can decide what is within your budget.  Just remember, it's hard to put a price on the peace of mind having a neat and orderly house will bring you.

     2. Could you do it yourself? That depends on how overwhelmed you are and how motivated you are to proceed with the de-cluttering process. It also depends on your own personal skills and if you have issues such as attention deficit. If you have already determined that hiring someone is out of the question, try asking a friend or relative to help. Sometimes just having someone else with you for support and to keep you on task makes the work go faster and a little less painfully.

     3. How long it takes also depends on whether you need help with just one area, like a closet or a basement, or you need a whole-house make-over. It also depends on how focussed you are and how easily you can make decisions about what to do with things.

     4. Don't let embarrasment stand in your way if you have decided that you need outside help. Any professional organizers you call will probably have seen much worse—after all, they wouldn't be in business if there weren't lots of people in the same situation.

An added benefit to hiring a professional organizer is that after they have helped you bring order to the chaos, they can give you tips for keeping it that way. You don't need to keep living with the stress of a disorganized home. Good luck!
