Consortia School Students, Staff, and Community Invited to Participate in Green Fitness Event

Get fit and join the MCPS Downcounty and Northeast Consortium Communities Oct.15 at Northwood High School for trail races on the restored Northwood Chesapeake Bay Trail.

On Oct. 15, 2011 students, staff and community members are invited to register and run in the 3rd annual Montgomery County Public Schools Consortia Cross-Country Championships. The races are run on 15 acres of land restored to usable green space by students and community members at Northwood High School.

Northwood, an Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) Green School, uses the event to advocate for green causes with shoe recycling, biodegradable cups, and the event itself - getting students and staff outdoors for exercise in the green spaces in the county.

All can watch the cross-country runners from the eight MCPS consortia high schools race for the Consortia Cup in the first races. Then there are free races MCPS students can register to run in for elementary runners and separate boys' and girls' middle school races.

The morning of green fitness concludes with an open 5-mile race on the rugged Northwood Chesapeake Bay Trail through creeks feeding into the Northwest Branch and a segment of the Rachel Carson/Northwest Branch Trail. It is a beautiful trail run that is the perfect way to spend a fall morning being fit!

Any consortia school, be it elementary, middle or high, that has five people registered to run in the open race will receive a score to determine which school community is the MCPS Consortia Champion!
