ANNAPOLIS, Md. (June 10, 2013) – In anticipation of Flag Day, Comptroller Peter Franchot reminded patriotic consumers today American, POW/MIA and Maryland flags are exempt from the state’s 6 percent sales tax. The exemption can be found under the Tax-General Article of the Maryland Code, Section 11-205.
“You can’t put a tax on patriotism, and in that same spirit, there is no tax on the purchase of American, Maryland or POW/MIA flags,” said Comptroller Franchot. “In fact, sales tax should not be charged on purchases of these flags now or at any other time of the year.”
