Update: Fire and Police Investigate 'Suspicious Package' in Silver Spring

Streets are blocked at three locations in downtown Silver Spring, a police spokesperson said.

Update, 4:05 p.m.: The bags were determined not to be a threat, said Lucille Baur, a spokesperson for police. The roads were reopened around 1:30 p.m. 

Original story, 1:34 p.m.: Two duffle bags left near Second Avenue and Colesville Road in Silver Spring and deemed "suspicious" garnered the attention of fire marshals and police officers Monday afternoon.

A spokesperson for Montgomery County Police confirmed that officers were assisting fire and rescue officers with the investigation of a suspicious package."

Officers closed roads in Silver Spring at three different points:

  1. Southbound Colesville Road at Georgia Avenue
  2. Northbound Colesville Road at East-West Highway
  3. Southbound Wayne Avenue and Georgia Avenue

Police are asking people to avoid the area of Colesville Road adjacent to the Silver Spring Metro and to avoid the McDonald's on Colesville Road.

Police are assisting fire marshals and were not able to give more details. A spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue was not available to comment.
