Fire Temporarily Shuts Down Big Greek Restaurant

Silver Spring Greek food lovers may have to take a short hiatus after a fire at the Big Greek Cafe closed the restaurant Tuesday.

When fire officials reached the restaurant at 8223 Georgia Ave., they initially didn't see a fire in the front but noticed smoke in the back, said Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Spokesman Oscar Garcia.

"When they arrived on the scene, there was smoke coming from the rear entry door," said Garcia.

The restaurant has an apartment complex on the second floor, and fire officials are still investigating the cause.

In the meantime, the Big Greek Cafe's gas and electric utilities have been shut off for an unknown time period. No injuries were reported.
