Girl, 8, Dies Following Incident at Community Pool in Rockville

Witnesses say victim couldn't climb ladder after diving off the diving board, according to Montgomery County Police.

An eight year old girl died Tuesday of unknown reasons at a community swimming pool in Rockville, according to Montgomery County Police.

The victim has been identified as Stephanie Benitez, of the 1700 block of Gunther Avenue.

Police responded at 2:39 p.m. Tuesday to the Rockville Swim Center at 355 Martins Lane regarding a possible drowning.

Witnesses told police that Stephanie had jumped from the diving board into the deep end of the pool. She had reportedly reached the ladder, but didn't have the strength to climb up.

After she started making "unusual movement," police say that lifeguards quickly responded, but she was unresponsive. Stephanie was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead late Tuesday.

Foul play is not expected, according to police, and the cause of death will be determined following an autopsy.
