Teen Hit by Van Suffers Broken Leg, Ran in Front of Bus: Police

A freshman at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School is in the hospital after he darted in front of a van and was struck near the intersection of East West Highway at Rosemary Hills Drive.

A 14-year-old Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School freshman was hit by a van in Silver Spring Thursday morning, reports NBC4Washington.

The teen was hit on East West Highway and taken to a local hospital. His condition is unknown, but Montgomery County Police said via Twitter that the victim's injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

East West Highway was shut down in both directions at Rosemary Hills Drive for several hours, but reopened at 1 p.m..

Montgomery County Police said on their Twitter feed that the extent of the boy's injuries are unknown.

Sebesebshaw Belew is recovering at Children’s National Medical Center after he stepped off a Metrobus after wrapping up his exams on the last day of school, reports WJLA TV.

“I’m lucky he’s still with me,” his father, Abebe Belew, told WJLA. Belew says his son suffered a number of injuries from the accident, including a broken leg and internal bleeding. The teen doesn't remember what happened.

Montgomery County Police say the teen was in front of the bus when he ran across the street.

“The van didn’t see him, as he was in the second lane,” Sgt. Nicholas Augustine told WJLA. “Information at this time shows the van had a green light, and the pedestrian was crossing against the walk sign at that time.”
