Initial Investigation Reveals Police Cruiser Lost Control

A Montgomery County Police officer was headed to assist in an incident but lost control of his cruiser.

Colesville Road is back open after a collision between the beltway and Sligo Creek Parkway shut it down during the morning drive, according to a tweet by Maryland State Highway Administration.

A preliminary investigation shows that the two-vehicle accident was initiated by Montgomery County Police Officer Brendan Hopkins after he lost control of his marked 2004 Ford Crown Victoria cruiser, according to an official release. 

Hopkins was headed to assist in an incident but lost control of the cruiser. The car "rotated, struck the center median, and crossed into the northbound lanes of Colesville Road."

A 2007 Toyota Corolla was driving Northbound on the same road and was hit by the police cruiser. The impact caused the Toyota Corolla to hit two stationary vehicles parked in the driveway of the 9300 block of Colesville Road. 

Hyattsville resident Yvonne Wilson, 62, was identified as the driver of the Totoya Corolla. An ambulance transported her to Suburban Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Also in the Toyota Corolla, was a man identified as Lorenzo Wilson, 66, who was taken to Suburban Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

They both remain hospitalized.

Officer Hopkins was released from Washington Hospital Center’s MedStar Unit with non-life-threatening injuries.

Montgomery County police detectives are currently investigating this collision and ask that anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301.840.2435.
