Montgomery County Police’s “Unofficial” Committee Curb Crime List

The police chief asked police officials to pool their thoughts.

Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger reached out to every police executive that served in any capacity to come with a list of options to help improve crime in Silver Spring.

Lt. Robert Carter of the Third District brought this list to a recent meeting in the Silver Spring Civic Center focused on the proposed teen curfew law. Carter said that although the list addressed downtown Silver Spring it could apply to the county’s crime issue overall.

  • Elevated observation posts.
  • Partnership with the movies theater.
  • Storefront police substation. 
  • Surveillance cameras downtown.
  • Trespass initiatives with private businesses.
  • Increase Silver Spring corp. employees to clean up; watch for crime.
  • Veterans Plaza should be closed by a certain time.
  • Ellsworth drive should be opened up in the evening.
  • Increase funding for the Juvenile assessment center in Rockville.
  • Strategic placement of police cars to act as scarecrows.
  • Revisit loitering law that was deemed unconstitutional.
