Pedestrian Death Involved Silver Spring Bus Driver

A 50-year-old man fell under the bus as it was pulling away from a bus stop on Georgia Avenue, according to police.

A Brookville man died in the hospital Thursday morning after being struck by a Metro bus on Wednesday night.

Ronald Maurice Johnson, 50, who had fallen under the bus on southbound Georgia Avenue, was taken to Suburban Hospital with what seemed to be non-life-threatening injuries, Montgomery County Police said. However, Johnson's condition worsened overnight and he was pronounced dead at 5:55 a.m. Thursday, police said.

The bus was pulling away from a bus stop on southbound Georgia Avenue when Johnson fell under the bus, according to police accounts. Police officers and fire and rescue personnel responded at approximately 11:08 p.m. to the area just south of the intersection with Olney-Sandy Spring Road, according to a news release.

The driver of the Metro bus has been identified as Anthony Whitaker, 54, of the 2200 block of Shorefield Road in Silver Spring.

Police are still investigating the incident and ask that anyone with information contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.  Callers may remain anonymous.
