Police Investigate Shooting Near Silver Spring

The shooting occurred on the north side of Eastern Avenue in the District of Columbia, police said.

A police officer was injured in a shootout early Friday morning on Eastern Avenue near the Silver Spring border, according to police reports.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the Montgomery County Police (MCP) are conducting an investigation into the shooting, according to a Montgomery County press release. Follow me on twitter for updates.

An initial investigation revealed that about 12:39 a.m. police received calls for what sounded like shots near the border of Silver Spring on 8100 block of Eastern Avenue, according to officials.

When Montgomery County police officers arrived on the scene, they heard gunshots and encountered an armed male. Shots were exchanged between the police officers and the suspect, police said.

Police officials say one of the officers on the scene was injured and was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was released. The officers involved in the shooting have been put on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, according to police.

The suspect is in critical condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
