Police Shoot Man 'Behaving Erratically' in Silver Spring Bank

Two Montgomery County Police officers are suspended with pay after fatally shooting a man carrying a knife in a Silver Spring bank.

A man carrying a knife in the Capital One Bank in Silver Spring was shot and killed by Montgomery County Police officers Tuesday.

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division are investigating the shooting that occurred inside the bank at 8740 Arliss St. in Silver Spring. As is standard procedure, the two officers involved 3rd District have been placed on paid administrative leave.

Their identities are expected be released on Wednesday.

Police were called to the bank at 11:54 a.m. on a report of a man behaving erratically. The suspect -- Donovan Dayton, 54, from Silver Spring – did not respond to officers’ instructions, police said.

Dayton allegedly showed a knife and threatened officers, one of whom shot Dayton in the torso. He was taken to an area hospital, where he died.
