Silver Spring Crime: Armed Robbery at Gas Station, Burglary at Hair Salon

Crimes in Silver Spring included in the county police's most recent crime summary.

The following information was supplied by the Montgomery County Police Department in its summary of major crimes occurring in the county between Aug. 19 and 27. The mention of an arrest or charge does not indicate a conviction.

Assaults:

  • An aggravated assault occurred in the 600 block of Silver Spring Avenue in Silver Spring on Friday, Aug. 16, at 8 p.m. The suspect is known to the victim.
  • An aggravated assault occurred in the 11500 block of Lockwood Drive in Silver Spring on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 1 p.m. The suspect is known to the victim.
  • An aggravated assault occurred in the 13900 block of Castle Boulevard in Silver Spring on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 11:40 p.m. The suspect is known to the victim.
  • An aggravated assault occurred in the 500 block of Eisner Street in Silver Spring on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 4:48 p.m. The suspect is known to the victim.

Armed robberies:

  • A strong-arm robbery occurred in the 900 block of Ellsworth Drive in Silver Spring on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 1:40 p.m. Three suspects forcefully removed property from the victim.
  • A strong-arm robbery occurred in the 600 block of Silver Spring Avenue in Silver Spring on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 5 a.m. The suspect assaulted the victim and obtained property. 
  • A strong-arm robbery occurred in the 8700 block of Colesville Road in Silver Spring on Friday, Aug. 23, at 5:48 p.m. The suspect assaulted the victim and obtained property. A 26-year-old man from Lanham was arrested in connection with the robbery.
  • An armed robbery occurred in the 8800 block of Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring on Friday, Aug. 23, at 2:05 a.m. The suspect threatened the victim with a weapon and obtained property.
  • An armed robbery occurred at the Shell Gas Station located at 9510 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring on Friday, Aug. 23, at 6:57 p.m. The suspect threatened the victim with a weapon and obtained property.
  • A strong-arm robbery occurred in the 11500 block of February Circle in Silver Spring on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 11:42 a.m. The suspect forcefully removed property from the victim.
  • An armed robbery occurred at the Sunoco located at 12040 Cherry Hill Road in Silver Spring on Monday, Aug. 26, at 8:48 p.m. The suspect threatened the victim with a weapon and obtained property.
  • An armed robbery occurred in the 1700 block of Staley Manor Drive in Silver Spring on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 1:47 a.m. The suspect threatened the victim with a weapon and obtained property.
  • A robbery occurred on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 9:38 p.m. in the 14100 block of Armilla Court in Silver Spring. The suspect is known to the victim. 
  • A strong-arm robbery occurred in the parking garage behind the Ambassador Apartments at 2715 University Blvd. West in Silver Spring on Friday, Aug. 23, at 7:45 p.m. The suspect assaulted the victim, then removed property. 

Commercial burglaries:

  • Two commercial burglaries occurred at 7896 Georgia Ave. in Silver Spring between 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, and 8:36 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24. In the first incident, entry was forced into J-Ana’s Hair Salon and property was taken. Entry was then forced into Live City Studios where additional property was taken.

School burglary:

  • An attempted burglary occurred at Page Elementary School (at 13400 Tamarack Rd. in Silver Spring) on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 3:32 p.m. There was an attempted forced entry, and nothing was taken.
Residential burglaries:
  • An attempted residential burglary occurred in the 9700 block of Fairway Avenue in Silver Spring on Friday, Aug. 23, at 7:42 a.m. There was an attempted forced entry, and nothing was taken.
  • A residential burglary occurred in the 10600 block of Crestmoor Drive in Silver Spring on Friday, Aug. 23, at 8 a.m. There was a forced entry, and a 49-year-old man from Washington, DC, was arrested in connection with the burglary. 
  • A residential burglary occurred in the 14000 block of Cricket Lane in Silver Spring on Monday, Aug. 19, between 1:30 and 1:50 p.m. There was no forced entry, and property was taken. 
  • A residential burglary occurred in the 16300 block of New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 2:23 p.m. There was no forced entry, and nothing was taken. 
  • A residential burglary was discovered on Friday, Aug. 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the 3800 block of Palmira Lane in Silver Spring. There was a forced entry, and it is unknown if anything was taken.

Thefts from vehicles:

  • Nine thefts from vehicles occurred between Monday, Aug. 19, and Monday, Aug. 26. Seven were entered by force. Most occurred in commercial garages or parking lots. Computers, cell phones, MP3 players, a GPS system and an auto stereo were taken. Incidents occurred on Carroll Avenue, Ramsey Avenue, Fidler Lane, Cameron Street, Bonifant Street, East West Highway and Wayne Avenue in Silver Spring.
  • Three thefts from vehicles occurred overnight between Thursday and Friday, Aug. 22 and 23. Doors were left unlocked and GPS units, a charger, coins, registration and a car manual were taken. The incidents occurred on Arvin Street, Galt Avenue and Elnora Street in Silver Spring. 

Graffiti:

  • Graffiti was located on Kennedy High School in Silver Spring sometime between the night of Thursday, Aug. 22, and the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 23.
  • Graffiti was discovered on a Pepco pole power box the evening of Thursday, Aug. 22, in the 2700 block of Atlanta Avenue in Silver Spring. 
Indecent exposure:
  • An indecent exposure occurred in the 8200 block of Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 6:48 p.m. A 51-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested in connection with the indecent exposure.
  • An indecent exposure occurred at Popeye’s (12102 Georgia Ave. in Silver Spring) on Saturday,  Aug. 24, at 8:05 p.m. The suspect—a 40-year-old man from Washington, DC—exposed himself and was arrested. 

Weapons arrest:

  • A weapons arrest was made on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 2:06 a.m. outside the Kmart at 14014 Connecticut Ave. in Silver Spring. The suspect was located in illegal possession of a handgun. A 25-year-old man from Silver Spring was arrested.
  • A weapons arrest was made on Friday, Aug. 23, at 9 a.m. in the 2700 block of University Boulevard West in Silver Spring. The suspect was discovered to illegally possess a weapon. A 20-year-old man from Silver Spring was arrested.
