Day Care, Church Burglaries; Gas Station Armed Robbery: Silver Spring Crime

Crimes in Silver Spring included in the county police department's most recent crime summary.

The following information was supplied by the Montgomery County Police Department in its summary of major crimes occurring in the county between Dec. 30 and Jan. 7. The mention of an arrest or charge does not indicate a conviction.

Assaults:

  • An aggravated assault occurred in the 8200 block of Dixon Avenue in Silver Spring on Wednesday, Jan. 1. The suspect—a 37-year-old man of no fixed address—assaulted the victim and was arrested. 
  • An aggravated assault occurred at Georgia Avenue and 16th Street in Silver Spring on Wednesday, Jan. 1, just after 5 a.m. The suspects are known to the victims. A 43-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman—both from Suitland—were arrested.
  • An aggravated assault occurred in the 8600 block of Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring on Sunday, Jan. 5. The suspect is known to the victim. A 28-year-old man from Silver Spring was arrested.
  • An aggravated assault occurred in the 11900 block of Old Columbia Pike in Silver Spring on Thursday, Jan. 2, between 10 and 10:30 a.m. The suspect—a 21-year-old man from Silver Spring—threatened police with multiple weapons and was arrested.

  • An armed robbery occurred in the 7600 block of Eastern Avenue in Silver Spring on Wednesday, Jan. 1, just before 10 p.m. The suspect threatened the victim with a weapon and obtained property. 
  • An armed robbery occurred in the 700 block of Richmond Avenue in Silver Spring on Monday, Jan. 6, around 9:30 p.m. The suspect threatened the victim with a weapon and obtained property. 
  • A strong-arm robbery occurred in the parking lot of the Shell Gas station at 11150 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, on Saturday, Jan. 4, between 4:45 and 5:05 p.m. The suspects assaulted the victim and obtained property. 
  • An armed robbery occurred in the 12300 block of Bushey Drive in Silver Spring on Friday, Jan. 3, at 9:45 p.m. The suspects threatened the victim with a weapon and obtained property. 
  • An armed robbery occurred near Veirs Mill Road and Ferrara Drive in Silver Spring on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 11 p.m. The suspects threatened the victim with a weapon and obtained property. 
  • An attempted strong-arm robbery occurred in the 2100 block of Shorefield Road in Silver Spring on Sunday, Jan. 5, at 9:15 p.m. The suspects unsuccessfully attempted to obtain property from the victim. 
  • A strong-arm robbery occurred in the 11200 block of Dotson Lane in Silver Spring on Monday, Jan. 6, at 8:10 p.m. The suspect forcefully removed property from the victim, then fled.

Commercial burglaries:

  • A commercial burglary occurred at Saint Matthew's Day Care (4001 Bel Pre Rd., Silver Spring) between Wednesday, Dec. 31, and Thursday, Jan. 2. Forced entry; nothing taken. A 21-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested.
  • A commercial burglary occurred at Glenmont Methodist Church (12901 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring) on Monday, Dec. 30, at 7:32 a.m. Forced entry; nothing taken. 
  • A commercial burglary occurred at the construction site of Rippling Brook Elementary School (13801 Rippling Brook Dr., Silver Spring) between Dec. 27 and 30. Forced entry; property taken.  

Residential burglaries:

  • A residential burglary occurred in the 8700 block of Gilbert Place in Silver Spring on Tuesday, Dec. 31, between 7:30 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. No forced entry; property taken. 
  • A residential burglary occurred in the 8600 block of Manchester Road in Silver Spring on Thursday, Jan. 2, between 8:30 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. No forced entry; property taken. 
  • A residential burglary occurred in the 9900 block of Dallas Avenue in Silver Spring on Monday, Jan. 6, just before 3:30 p.m. Forced entry; nothing taken. A 16-year-old boy from Wheaton and a 15-year-old boy from Silver Spring were arrested.
  • An attempted residential burglary occurred in the 11300 block of Baroque Road in Silver Spring on Monday, Dec. 30, around 10 p.m. Attempted forced entry; nothing taken. 
  • A residential burglary occurred in the 1500 block of December Drive in Silver Spring on Friday, Jan. 3, between 9 a.m. and 5:40 p.m. Forced entry; property taken. 
  • An attempted residential burglary occurred in the 12800 block of Tamarack Road in Silver Spring on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 2:48 a.m. Forced entry; nothing taken. 
  • An attempted residential burglary occurred in the 3400 block of Kilkenny Street in Silver Spring on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 3:28 a.m. Forced entry; nothing taken. 
  • A residential burglary occurred in the 900 block of Venice Drive in Silver Spring on Monday, Jan. 6, between 7:45 a.m. and 6:40 p.m. Forced entry; property taken. 
  • An attempted residential burglary occurred in the 11500 block of Stewart Lane in Silver Spring on Monday, Jan. 6, between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Attempted forced entry; nothing taken. 
  • A residential burglary occurred in the 15400 block of Tindlay Street in Silver Spring between Dec. 22 and 28. Forced entry; property taken. 
  • An attempted burglary occurred in the 12700 block of Layhill Road in Silver Spring on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 3:48 p.m. Attempted forced entry; nothing taken. 

Thefts from vehicles:

  • Three thefts from vehicles occurred at the 7-Eleven store at 7980 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, on three consecutive days beginning on New Year's Day. Each theft took place between about 10:30 and 11:15 a.m. In each theft, entry into the vehicle was forced, and a purse was taken. 
  • Eight thefts from vehicles on Glen Ross Road and Luzerne Avenue in Silver Spring likely occurred between midnight on Monday, Jan. 6, and the end of Tuesday, Jan. 7. Two other thefts from vehicles also occurred on these streets, at unspecified times. None of the vehicles showed any sign of forced entry. Loose items—including charger cables, change, etc.—were taken from the vehicles.
  • Three thefts from vehicles occurred in the 5700 block of Huckburn Court in Silver Spring between Wednesday, Jan. 1, at 6 p.m. and Thursday, Jan. 2, at 8 a.m. Loose items—including GPS units, a laptop, gift cards and CDs—were taken.
