Bag Tax Passes in Montgomery County

The extra charge will apply to paper and plastic January 1, 2012.

Silver Spring residents will be forking over an extra 5 cents starting Jan. 1 for a bag tax if they don't use reusable bags. The Montgomery County Council passed the legislation 8 to 1 early Tuesday, reported the Washington Post

County Executive Isiah Leggett thanked  the County Council for approving the bag tax and helping the environment.

"We do not see this as a source of revenue. The more people who use reusable bags, the less revenue to the County and that is just fine,” Leggett said in a released statement.

Officials said the $1 million collected will go to funding water protection and to provide reusable bags for those who can't afford them.
