Cherry Blossom Lovers Can Expect a Break from Metro Construction

If the weather is great, Metro ridership increases by more than 15 percent during Cherry Blossom season, according to officials.

Silver Spring Metro riders headed to the Tidal Basin to enjoy cherry blossoms this spring can expect less delays on their trip.

Metro officials say they are taking a break from an aggressive schedule of track work and rebuilding to make traveling during Cherry Blossom season much smoother and enjoyable for riders.

"Metro is the preferred travel choice for hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Tidal Basin each spring," Metro General Manager and CEO Richard Sarles said. "To ensure a seamless travel experience, we will take a short hiatus from our aggressive rebuilding efforts."

To accommodate the expected higher ridership, Sarles said Metro plans to  operate more eight-car trains during off-peak hours and on the weekend.

Metro Cherry Blossom Construction Schedule:

  • The weekend construction schedule will halt Saturday, March, 24 through Sunday, April 15. Construction is expected to resume Friday, April 20 at 10 p.m.
  • Midday track work between Monday, March 26, and Friday, April 13 will be suspended.
  • All scheduled track work will occur after 10 p.m.
