Montgomery County Councilmember Valerie Ervin (Dist-5) will be honored by the National Council of Asian Indian Associations (NCAIA) on Sunday.
India became an independent nation 65 years ago and every year to celebrate the NCAIA honors an official in the community who exemplifies great leadership.
Dr. Nagender Madavaram, founder and current chairman of NCAIA, said Councilmember Ervin is being recognized for the inspiration she provides others.
“We are giving this award to Councilmember Valerie Ervin because of her work in public service for the community. She is instrumental in her efforts to bring minorities into the political field,” Madavaram said.
Councilmember Ervin said she was appreciative of the honor.
“This organization exemplifies the commitment of the Asian Indian community to freedom, democracy and full participation in community life. I look forward to a continued relationship as we build toward a more inclusive and diverse society,” she said.
Ervin will be honored in Greenbelt at Martin’s Crosswinds located at 7400 Greenway Center Dr. The event starts at 6:30 p.m.
