County Police Offers Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic

The county's Animal Management Division will offer six free rabies vaccination clinics for county animal owners.

The Montgomery County Police Department’s Animal Services Division will be offering six rabies vaccination clinics on Sundays in 2012.

The vaccines are free for pets of county residents and cost $4 for those out of county.

The clinics will begin at 10 a.m. and will end at noon on the following days:

  • April 15                    
  • May 20                     
  • June 17   
  • July 15 
  • August 19               
  • September 16

State law requires that all pets— dogs, cats and ferrets— over the age of four months be vaccinated. Failure to comply could cost a pet owner a $500 fine. Residents may also have to purchase a pet license for their animals, if they are not licensed already.

According to a police press release, exposure to rabies can be prevented with vaccination and by following these guidelines:

  • Have your dogs, cats, and ferrets vaccinated against rabies and keep the vaccinations up to date.
  • Avoid sick animals and those acting in an unusual manner.
  • Do not approach, touch or feed wild or stray animals.
  • Do not allow pets to roam free.
  • Teach children to stay away from wild animals or animals they do not know.
  • Prevent bats and other wildlife from entering your home by using appropriate window screens and chimney caps.

The clinics will be at Montgomery County Animal Shelter located at 14645 Rothgeb Drive in Rockville.
