Direct Shipping of Wine to Homes Soon to Be Legal in Silver Spring

Maryland House Bill 1175 takes effect on Friday, July 1, 2011.

This Friday, House Bill 1175, the “Direct Wine Shipping” law takes effect, allowing people in Maryland to have wine shipped to their homes from in- or out-of-state wineries. The main stipulation of the law is that the wine must come from a winery - not a retailer or auction house.

According to various news reports, only a handful of the 50 or so Maryland wineries have applied for the current permit that would allow them to ship their wares to Maryland homes.

Consumers will have to demonstrate legal proof of age (at least 21) to the delivery driver, and there is a limit of 18 cases per year delivered from each winery.
