Governor Martin O'Malley Signs Tuition Law, Education Despite Parent's Immigration Status

Students can attend college despite their parent's immigration status at in-state tuition rates.

Governor Martin O'Malley signed a new law enabling students to achieve a secondary education despite the immigration status of their parents. Senate Bill 167 allows undocumented immigrants to be exempt from paying the out-of-state tuition rate at community colleges under specified circumstances.

According to a bilingual post on Governor O'Malley's blog, every child who resides in Maryland has a right to an education if they have "graduated from a Maryland high school, pay taxes in our state, and are on a path toward citizenship."

The law also includes an extension of time that an honorably discharged veteran must present evidence to qualify for a resident tuition rate.
