Humane Society of the United States Offers $2,500 Reward in Silver Spring Deer Killing

June 24 incident on Silver Spring Avenue is still under investigation.

The Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust issued a statement offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the “identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for illegally shooting a deer in a Silver Spring, Md. Residential neighborhood.”

Recently reported in the Gazette, on June 24 a deer was shot by an unknown person or persons in the backyard of a home in the 700 block of Silver Spring Avenue. According to Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) Spokesperson Officer Howard Hersh, there are no new developments to date, but MCPD continues to investigate a crime that he does not recall happening previously in Silver Spring, calling it “very unusual in such a high density area.”

Officer Hersh also stated that aside from a small area in the northern end of the county, and certain circumstances as outlined in Chapter 57 of Montgomery County’s laws concerning weapons, it is illegal to discharge a firearm in Montgomery County. The incident in question does not appear to fall under any of those circumstances and the person or persons involved could face charges of reckless endangerment and discharging a firearm within the county.
