How Is Silver Spring's Growth Affecting NW DC?

With downtown Silver Spring just a hop, skip and short ride on the 70 bus from Washington, DC, there are bound to be issues that jointly affect both jurisdictions.

Montgomery County Councilmember Valerie Ervin (D-Dist 5) plans to meet with District Councilmember Muriel Bowser tonight, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Shepherd Park neighborhood, just south of Silver Spring, to discuss those things.

Silver Spring's growth is beginning to change the DC neighborhood, according to some residents interviewed by the Washington Post. 

“I think there is a very positive sign to see young couples choosing to live an urban lifestyle near Metro,” Tim Shuy, president of the Shepherd Park Citizens Association, told the Post.

“It is just that ours has always been a quiet neighborhood up in the northwest corner, and now we have lots of folks who are not paying our taxes in D.C. using a lot of our services.”

“The residents of Silver Spring and the District share many of the same issues, and we thought this meeting would be a great way to discuss constituent concerns and answer questions,” said Ervin.

The meeting will be at Shepherd Elementary School at 7800 14th St. NW.
