High Percentage of Montgomery County Residents Are Limited English Speakers

Since 2006, Silver Spring had the greatest increase in students who are not proficient in English.

More than 13,000 public elementary school students are limited in English proficiency in Montgomery County, according to a recent report by Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy (MCAEL).

MCAEL's focus is to help adults in the county gain English literacy skills "to reach their potential as parents, workers and community members."

This is more than a 40 percent increase over six years, which indicates a necessity for adults in the county to have English proficiency as reported in the Gazette.
