Montgomery County Commuter Challenge Expands to Silver Spring

Deadline to register for the walk and ride challenge is Sept. 28. The early bird registration ends Sept. 23.

Walking and riding public transportation to work pays off in a three-week challenge organized by Montgomery County Commuter Services. In its third year, the county-wide challenge will include the business district of Silver Spring and Friendship Heights. 

In previous years, Bethesda and North Bethesda have been included.

If you work in the downtown area, than your office is eligible to apply, according to the Transportation Management District map. This includes businesses along 16th Street, Colesville Road, Eastern Avenue, Cedar Street, and businesses along Fenton Street.

“Three to five coworkers can team up and multiple teams in the same company is allowed,” said James Carlson of Montgomery County Commuter Services.

The official competition starts Oct. 10 and goes through Oct. 28. Each registered team will be equipped with a pedometer, T-shirts, and other materials the week before the Challenge begins.

Individuals who log in 25,000 steps each week will be automatically entered into a random drawing for "grab bag" prizes that Commuter Services gear, gift cards to local retailers and restaurants, and more. Also, if an individual logs in up to 50,000 steps they will be automatically entered into a random drawing to win an iPod. 

The team with the most steps overall will be entered into a grand prize drawing so that each team member can win a prize.
