Pet Store in Silver Spring Closes

After four years, store owners decide to close.

Update: July 30

The owners of Living Ruff are officially closing down their shop in a week.  In a Facebook post they say "sales up to 70% off, plus awesome antique furniture and fixtures for sale."

Silver Spring residents will have one less pet store as a resource once Living Ruff closes its doors at the end of July.

The pet store has become a cornerstone in the community for pet owners who need help finding resources for their pets, including tips and tricks to make their pooches behave.

In an email to customers this week, owners Ron and Jessica Simon said they had mixed emotions.

Part of the email read:

It has been our extreme pleasure serving you, your pets, and the Silver Spring community the past four years. Why are we mixed? Well, because while we're sad to say goodbye, we're also excited to announce we're expecting our first (human) child in the Fall, and we feel this is the best decision for our family.

Living Ruff has been instrumental in organizing Dog Days, one of the biggest dog events in downtown, which brought together dog lovers from all over the region. It also became a hub for the Montgomery County Humane Society and prospective pet owners.

The pet store will be closing at the end of July. Throughout the month they will have discounts on their pet merchandise and will be selling their furniture.

Where will you go once this store closes? Club Wags?

Yes. If Club WAGS continues honoring their small discount to dog walkers and their clients, as they initially offered upon their opening. Living Ruff never acknowledged my usefulness/value as a dogwalker (of 70-plus neighborhood dogs). Said "That's nice" when I introduced myself on 2 different occasions. Actually, they didn't even say that much on one of those occasions. Otherwise, Petco has recently been offering practically free delivery and they now carry Basic Instinct, a great brand of dog food I recommend to most all my clients. Living Ruff was such a lovely store but always looked empty.
