DC teacher Michelle Lee of Silver Spring among educators receiving full funding for classroom projects.

A Silver Spring teacher and student met pop chart-topper Katy Perry during her D.C. concert stop as part of an effort to bolster school supplies in the region.

About 55 DC-area classrooms are receiving money to shore-up classroom supplies, courtesy of Perry and Staples’ “Make Roar Happen” campaign.

Perry graced the stage at the Verizon Center in downtown DC Tuesday, and met with teacher Michelle Lee and student Shavel Proctor.

“I’m glad to partner with Staples on my Prismatic World Tour to raise awareness and funds for DonorsChoose.org, and to remind my fans that a small gesture can have a huge impact on the very basic materials classrooms need for teachers to help students reach their full potential,” Perry said in a statement.

Lee made a fundraising webpage on DonorChoose.org to help pay for textbooks and flashcards she can use to prepare her students at the Francis L. Cardozo Education Campus in Washington, D.C., to take the Advanced Placement Psychology test. The “Roar” campaign is paying for the entire renovation.

Monday, Staples made a $1 million donation to DonorChoose.org, fully funding all of the projects that day.

The big-box store also funded every DC-area project that day, providing resources to 47 teachers and helping $3,900 kids in the nation’s capital receive better instruction.

Other winners for the VIP backstage meet-and-greet with Perry include Julie Rukavina, a teacher at Calvin Coolidge Senior High School in DC who is gaining history books, study and instruction material for her classroom and student Assima Egbame.

Staples is also contributing nearly $44,000 to all outstanding needs on DonorsChoose.org, aiding in fulfilling the needs of DC-area teachers and students.
