MoCo Schools Leader a Finalist for Hartford, CT Superintendent Post

One of Montgomery County’s top school leaders is a finalist for the superintendent’s job in Hartford, CT.

Beth Schiavino-Narvaez, one of the deputy superintendents in Montgomery County, is one of two finalists for the top schools post in Hartford, according to the Harford Courant. The former teacher, Fulbright Scholar and Peace Corps volunteer earned her doctorate from Harvard University.

Schiavino-Narvaez has worked in Montgomery County since 2011, when she was hired by Montgomery County Superintendent Joshua P. Starr to be a community superintendent, says The Washington Post. She was promoted to deputy superintendent in 2012. Her office oversees schools, supervises principals and coordinates support to schools through six associate superintendents.

“The opportunity to lead, work and serve with so many outstanding colleagues at MCPS strengthened my calling to lead my own district someday,” Schiavino-Narvaez told the Post. “I am honored to have come this far in the Hartford selection process and am looking forward to meeting the community there next week as the process continues.”

According to the Montgomery County Public Schools’ website, Schiavino-Narvaez is a graduate of Penn State University and received both her master’s degree and doctorate degree from Harvard University.

She has worked as a teacher in Pennsylvania, a school and district administrator in Massachusetts, a Fulbright Scholar in South Korea, and a Peace Corps volunteer in the Republic of Kiribati.

Most recently, she was the community superintendent for the Northeast Consortium and Sherwood clusters in Montgomery County.
