Blair High School Hotline Seeks to Curb Student Issues

School officials encourage students who have information to send it in.

Students and administrators at Montgomery Blair High School have a new way to keep in contact during and outside of school hours—the Blazer Hotline.

The idea is to communicate with students through technology because that is the way they communicate with each other, said Cedric Boatman who is head of security at the school.

“Kids need a way to communicate with adults and they do more texting than talking,” Boatman said.

Boatman has worked with the school since 2009 and views the hotline as a way to curb issues that may arise in the school and in the community.

Blair’s Principal Renay Johnson echoes this sentiment.

With a school educating about 2000 students, safety is definitely a concern, said Johnson.

“We have posters around the building and students know if they are feeling harassed or—if they see something or know about something happening in the community or the school—they can anonymously text or call,” Johnson added.

One of the latest messages has been, “Hey security, how are you?” which is a good sign for Boatman that students are engaged and are testing out the new system.

Boatman encourages anyone in the community with information about Blair students to text or call 240-688-7940 to report it.
