New Middle School Site in Review for Silver Spring Neighborhood

Silver Spring residents raise concern over recommendation to place new middle school in Rosemary Hills-Lyttonsville Local Park.

A Town Hall meeting was scheduled for April 21 at 7:00 p.m., at the Coffield Community Center in Silver Spring to discuss the recommendation by a Site Selection Advisory Committee that the Montgomery County School Board place the new Bethesda-Chevy Chase Middle School #2 at the Rosemary Hills-Lyttonsville Local Park site

The new middle school is needed to alleviate overcrowding at Westland Middle School in Bethesda. It would also permit 6th grade students at Chevy Chase and North Chevy Chase elementary schools—the only elementary schools in Montgomery County to teach 6th grade—to move on to the new middle school.

The Site Selection Committee considered ten potential sites for the new middle school and, by a process of elimination, selected the Rosemary Hills/Lyttonsville Local Park site as the most suitable. However, a group of concerned residents in the affected area are raising concern that the community was not involved in the site selection process, which they termed as flawed, and that the decision will negatively impact their community.
