Blair Student Creatively Documents Life in Silver Spring

Photography was a hobby that has turned into something more for 17-year-old Tolu Omokehinde.

When most students are finding their way home or socializing with friends, one Silver Spring student is braving the cold and pursuing his passion in photography.

Tolu Omokehinde, a 17-year-old senior at , found his passion for taking pictures when he was a sophomore trying to find a hobby and was inspired by his father.

“My dad was a photographer a long time ago and when I was really young he bought me one my first cameras," Omokehinde said. "I used to take pictures with it all the time."

Omokehinde, who is the Print Managing Photo Editor at Blair's school paper Silver Chips Online, and his friend Nick Grossman started a photography series that documents life in Silver Spring through time-lapses videos.

Their first project, released in early January, took about five hours and about 2,800 photos to complete.

Although photography fuels his creativity, Omokehinde has his sights set on becoming an immunologist, or the study of treating diseases that involves the immune system.

“I actually worked for two summers at Thomas Jefferson University [in] the microbiology department and I really loved the research I was doing there," he said. "I just really got into immunology this past year."

Omokehinde has applied to various universities and is considering his options at Southern Methodist University, University of Maryland, University of Connecticut, Towson University and many more.

As he weighs his options, one thing is for sure—photography will continue to be a hobby for him.

Tolu Omokehinde welcomes emails with your suggestions for his next feature in Silver Spring.
