What to Know for Montgomery County's First Day Back to School

As the first day of school quickly approaches, find out what you need to do to get ready.

As August approaches, parents, students and schools are gearing up for the first day back to school, which happens to be just over one month from now.

Though it may seem like the summer couldn’t possibly be almost over, on Aug. 27, Montgomery County students will be heading to bus stops with backpacks filled with new notebooks—so it’s time to start preparing for the start of the school year.

Make sure your child is enrolled for school, has the required verification documents and has met all the necessary age and immunization requirements so they can receive schedule and transportation information.

According to the county, any child who will be 5 years old by Sept. 1 of this year and under 21 on the first day of school is eligible for enrollment.

Use the county’s school assignment locator to determine the school with which you should register.

Pretty soon, local Targets and Staples will be flooded with parents trying to buy last-minute school supplies—from notebooks to backpacks, rulers, No. 2 pencils—so that students are fully prepared for the first day.

In addition, the county will hold its annual back-to-school fair on Saturday, Aug. 25, at Carver Educational Services (850 Hungerford Dr.) in Rockville. The fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and students and parents will have the opportunity to ask questions of MCPS staff and learn about community resources.
