East County Leadership Summit - Silver Spring

By Alan Bowser

The 2013 East County Leadership Summit was held on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at the Marilyn Praisner Community Center in Burtonsville.  It was hosted by the East County Citizens Advisory Board, chaired by Peter Myo Khin, and attracted residents, policymakers and elected officials from throughout Montgomery County.

The Summit discussions focused on six principal topics—housing, education, transportation, economic development, health & human services, and public safety, led by Richard Nelson, Director, Department of Housing & Community Affairs, Dr. Beth Schiavine-Warvaez, Deputy Superintendent, Montgomery County Public Schools, Keith Compton of the County’s Department of Transportation, Steve Silverman, Director, Department of Economic Development, Stuart Venzke, COO of the County’s Department of Health & Human Services, and Darryl McSwain, Assistant Chief of the Montgomery County Police Department.

Much of the Summit discussion focused on economic development and transportation issues.  Speakers asked questions about the proposed East County Science Center and the development of the Burtonsville Crossing property, suggesting that the more attention needed to be given to addressing the job-housing imbalance in the area.  Residents also asked questions about the traffic implications of the new development, a possible bus rapid transit route along Route 29, and the impact of proposed grade-separated interchanges along Route 29 for local businesses and neighborhoods.

Among the elected officials at the Summit were County Executive Isiah Leggett, Council President Nancy Navarro, County Councilmembers Valerie Ervin, Phil Andrews and George Leventhal, Congressman John Sarbanes, Maryland State Senators Jamie Raskin and Karen Montgomery, and District 14 State Delegate Eric Luedtke.
