Silver Spring GreenFest 2013

The 2nd Annual Silver Spring Greenfest was held on Saturday, October 5, 2013 in the Silver Spring Civic Building.  The popular festival was presented by Silver Spring Green, the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection, and the Fenton Street Market, and sponsored by The Blairs, Ecocraft Builders, Evergreen Productions, MJ Event Management, Impact Silver Spring, Whole Foods Silver Spring and Clean Currents (Green Energy Solutions).  This year’s theme was “From Awareness to Action for a Sustainable Future.”

A large number of environmental advocacy organizations were represented at the Festival, including the Audubon Natural Society, Conservation Montgomery, Green Wheaton and Friends of Sligo Creek.  There were also many "green businesses" on Veterans Plaza, showcasing such products and services such as  green lawn & garden care, carsharing,green pet care, renewable energy, eco-friendly cleaning services, stormwater management, natural skin care, home & business energy efficiency, appliance & building materials, sustainable home & business design, and materials re-use. The Festival was kicked off at a morning program featuring Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and Montgomery County Councilmember Valerie Ervin (D-5).

Throughout the day, there were well-attended panel discussions and lectures on a broad range of sustainable development issues including:   Climate Change: Building a Culture of Community and Corporate Sustainability; Nature’s Limits; Sustainable Agriculture in Kenya; Diversity and the Environment; and The Sustainable Food Imperative.
