Silver Spring Transit Center to open in mid-2014? More fixes needed.

In a recent County Council session, Montgomery County officials reported that the public would have to wait a while longer for the opening of the long-awaited Silver Spring Transit Center. 

While County officials had previously noted that concrete segments of the Transit Center roadways were either too thin or too thick from the design specifications and would need to be reinforced by a controversial application of epoxy, they now acknowledge that that about 250 interior beams and girders also need to be strengthened.

Although David Dise, the Director of the County's Department of General Services, said that the project opening would not be delayed by the additional work, it may be difficult to complete all the work and secure all of the necessary inspections and approvals by mid-2014, the current estimate.  Reinforcing the concrete segments, for example, cannot be completed until warmer weather next Spring.

The Center would bring together Metro, Ride On, Amtrak, MARC, buses, taxis, and the Purple Line.
